Okay so the Avengers: Doomsday trailer is out and honestly, the internet cannot agree on anything. Some people are losing their minds because Steve Rogers is back and Robert Downey Jr. sounds genuinely menacing as Doctor Doom. Others are staring at their screens trying to figure out what they just watched. Both reactions make sense, and that's the interesting part.
The Russo Brothers are back at the helm, which is the single most reassuring thing about this movie. They made Infinity War and Endgame, and those two films remain the gold standard for what a superhero crossover can actually be. The problem the trailer runs into is that it is trying to introduce an almost comically large roster all at once. The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and basically anyone Marvel has ever put on screen are all apparently converging in December. Fan reactions have been split, with some calling it a chaotic character dump and others going theory-mode on every single frame.
The footage that genuinely works is anything involving Doctor Doom. RDJ's voice is doing something different here, not Tony Stark with a tin mask but something colder and more deliberate. There is a shot of Thor swinging Stormbreaker at Doom and it stopping dead, which is the kind of visual shorthand that immediately communicates just how much trouble everyone is in. That's how you establish a villain in a trailer.
The Cumming of it all is a separate conversation. Alan Cumming gave a very candid interview about filming in near-total isolation on green screen, not always knowing who he was acting opposite, and not being entirely sure which character Nightcrawler was even fighting in certain scenes. That kind of admission tends to stick with people, especially when audiences are already skeptical about CGI quality in big Marvel movies. The Doomsday production designer has said the film uses 80 percent practical sets, so hopefully the finished cut looks better than the trailer suggests.
None of this matters to your wallet yet because the movie already pulled in $16.5 million in advance ticket sales on its first day, and that was before IMAX was even available since Dune Part Three locked down the entire IMAX footprint for December 18. People are showing up regardless of how the trailer landed. If you want to get in the right headspace for this one, rewatch Infinity War. Not because Doomsday will necessarily be as good, but because reminding yourself what the Russos can do when everything clicks is the best reason to stay optimistic.
