Kane Parsons started posting the Backrooms series on YouTube in January 2022. He was 16.

The videos were found footage short films set in an internet myth about an endless maze of empty office space you could accidentally fall into. They looked real enough to confuse people, and they got tens of millions of views.

A24 saw them and signed Parsons to direct the feature. He was still a teenager.

The result is a full studio film with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, shot like a proper horror movie but built from the same aesthetic Parsons developed on YouTube. At 20, he became the youngest director in history to open at number one at both the domestic and global box office.

The Backlot community has been watching it. It is available to rent on Amazon and Apple TV.
