Battle of Oslo opens July 3 in US theaters. Norwegian director Daniel Fahre tells the true story of Colonel Birger Eriksen, who on April 9, 1940, ordered his coastal fortress to fire on the German heavy cruiser Blücher. The ship sank. The Nazi invasion was delayed long enough for the Norwegian king and government to escape.
Eriksen saved the country and was later called before a military commission for it. Fahre called the film "Unpleasantly Relevant." Bjørn Sundquist plays Eriksen with the weight of a man who knows exactly what he is doing and does it anyway.
For anyone who wants a war film built around a single decision rather than a battle sequence.
Watch April 9th first for context on the same day from another angle.
The movie about the man who started the war by doing the right thing.
