Citizen Kane is back in theaters. Fathom Events is screening it July 5 and July 8 at theaters nationwide to mark the film's 85th anniversary. Each screening includes an introduction by Leonard Maltin.
Orson Welles directed and starred in this film in 1941. He was 25 years old. Every technique directors use today, Welles invented or refined here: deep focus, nonlinear narrative, the low angle shot. Every film you have ever loved has borrowed something from Citizen Kane.
If you have never seen it on a big screen, this is the screening. If you have seen it, bring someone who hasn't.
Before you go, watch The Magnificent Ambersons. Welles made it the following year. The studio cut it to pieces and you can still tell it is extraordinary.
The most important film in history is in a theater near you this weekend.
