Two medieval travelers rest at a small campfire on a grass hillside under a stormy grey sky, the Scottish highlands rolling out behind them in the distance

The Death of Robin Hood opened June 19 from A24. Hugh Jackman plays a wounded and morally corroded outlaw near the end of his life, long after the legend curdled. Director Michael Sarnoski made Pig, and he brings the same patient brutality to medieval England.

An aging Robin Hood is gravely injured in battle and found by a woman who offers something like redemption. Jodie Comer plays the woman. Bill Skarsgård co-stars. It is 123 minutes and rated R.

Critics gave it 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are at 56%. That split tells you exactly what kind of film this is: less swashbuckle, more reckoning with what a life of violence actually costs.

Watch Before You Go: Pig (2021).

Group Chat Take: Hugh Jackman with a bow and a conscience. The A24 version of this legend was always going to look like this.
