The original Devil Wears Prada came out in 2006. Everyone involved has talked about it for twenty years. They could have made a sequel at any point.
They didn't. On purpose.
Director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna held off until they had a real reason. "It's not meant to just be a love letter to the fans," Brosh McKenna said. "It had to be something meaty." What changed their minds wasn't nostalgia. "It's curiosity," Frankel said.
Knowing they only came back when they had something to say changes what the sequel feels like to watch. The whole original cast returned: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci. People on Backlot are watching it this month. It hits Disney+ and Hulu on July 29.
