Evil Dead II is back in limited theaters. Sam Raimi made it in 1987 and invented a new mode of horror. It is a sequel and a soft reboot. Ash Williams goes back to the cabin. Everything goes wrong again.
Bruce Campbell plays Ash. It is the performance that made him. The film mixes genuine dread with physical comedy so extreme it becomes its own language. Raimi built the camera rigs himself. The possessed hand scene became a textbook.
If you have only seen Evil Dead II at home, you have not actually seen it. This is a film that exists in the reaction of the audience next to you.
Before you go: The Evil Dead. 1981, Sam Raimi. The original that set this all in motion. Raimi shot it in Tennessee on a shoestring and sold it at Cannes. Ash is quieter. It is terrifying.
