Horsegirls opens in limited theaters July 17. It is Lauren Meyering's first feature.

Lillian Carrier plays Margarita, a 22-year-old autistic woman who finds her people through hobbyhorsing. Carrier is autistic herself. Gretchen Mol plays her mother, whose cancer has returned. Tony Hale is in the cast too. Mol won Best Actress at the Seattle Film Festival and the film took the Grand Jury prize.

Hobbyhorsing is a real sport. Competitors perform equestrian movements with stick horses. No actual horses. It started in Finland. The film premiered at Tribeca and most people have not heard of it yet.

This is for anyone who has wanted a film where an autistic character is allowed to be difficult and capable and funny and real, all at once.

Before you go: Hobbyhorse Revolution. Selma Vilhunen's 2017 Finnish documentary about the people who started this.
