Hobbyhorsing is a real sport. Participants simulate equestrian dressage and show jumping with handmade stick horses. They train, they compete, they qualify for tournaments.
Lauren Meyering wrote a script about it. That script sat on the Black List, Hollywood's annual survey of the best unproduced screenplays, for five years before it got made.
Horsegirls is Meyering's first feature. Lillian Carrier plays Margarita, a 22-year-old autistic woman who finds hobbyhorsing while her mother, played by Gretchen Mol, faces a health scare. The script is based on producer Mackenzie Breeden's own family.
The film won at Tribeca before opening in limited theaters July 17. The kind of film where the subject sounds small but doesn't feel that way.
