A marine biologist arrives at a fish farm in a Norwegian fjord. Two teenagers turn up dead. Something in the depths is responsible.
Kraken, from director Pål Øie, is a Norwegian creature feature now in US theaters. It is a film built around scale: how small the bodies on the surface are, how dark the water below them. The creature design is outstanding, and the dread builds with real discipline.
This is for anyone who wants their horror grounded in geography and restraint.
Before you go: Jaws set the blueprint. Trollhunter if you want another excellent Norwegian creature film as company.
