Minions & Monsters Opens July 1 and the Early Reviews Are Good

Minions in Old Hollywood from Minions & Monsters, the 2026 Illumination animated film directed by Pierre Coffin

Minions & Monsters opens July 1. The new Illumination film is the third in the Minions prequel series, and this one drops them into Old Hollywood in the 1940s, where they accidentally summon a Cthulhu-like creature and have to save the world from the monsters they created.

The reviews from Annecy are solid. Critics are calling it a love letter to classic cinema, which is not something you expect from a Minions movie.

The cast is genuinely stacked: Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, and Trey Parker. George Lucas has a role in the film, which is a weird and wonderful sentence.

If you have kids, this is your weekend movie. If you just love animation, it is also yours. You do not need to have seen the previous Minions films, but it helps.

The original Despicable Me from 2010 still holds up. That is where it all started.
