Narnia: The Magician's Nephew 2027 film directed by Greta Gerwig, featuring Emma Mackey as Jadis, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep

Greta Gerwig directing a Narnia film felt like a rumor that was too perfect to be real, but here we are. Netflix's The Magician's Nephew opens with IMAX previews on February 10, 2027, followed by a wide theatrical release on February 12. Sony is handling international distribution. This is not a streaming dump. This is a full theatrical rollout, and that distinction matters.

The cast is stacked. Emma Mackey plays the White Witch. Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep round out the ensemble. Mark Ronson is scoring the film, which is an unexpected choice that I find genuinely interesting. Ronson's ear for texture and mood could bring something completely different to a fantasy score. This is not your typical orchestral bombast hire.

What makes this project compelling beyond the names is the source material choice. The Magician's Nephew is the Narnia origin story. It is the book that explains how the wardrobe works, how the lamp post ended up in that snowy forest, and how Jadis became the threat she is. Most adaptations start with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because it is the most famous. Going with The Magician's Nephew suggests Gerwig and Netflix are building a franchise from the ground up rather than retreading the entry everyone already knows.

Gerwig is coming off Lady Bird, Little Women, and Barbie. Three films, three wildly different tones, all successful both critically and commercially. She has proven she can handle intimate character work and massive spectacle. Narnia sits somewhere in between, a deeply personal children's fantasy with world building that demands scale. It feels like a natural fit.

The theatrical window matters here. The film arrives on Netflix on April 2, which means AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and every other major chain gets it first. Netflix has been slowly warming to the idea that some films deserve a real theatrical run before hitting the platform, and giving Gerwig's Narnia that treatment signals how much confidence they have in this one. It is a far cry from the days when Netflix would barely give a prestige film a one week qualifying run.

If you loved what Gerwig did with Barbie, reimagining a familiar property through her own specific lens, this is the next one to care about. The Narnia books have been waiting for a filmmaker who could bring genuine artistry to the material without losing the magic that made generations of kids fall in love with those stories. Gerwig might be exactly that filmmaker.
