The meltdown scene in Rick Dalton's trailer is the one everyone remembers. DiCaprio crying, spitting, sobbing into the mirror. It wasn't in the script.
DiCaprio went to Tarantino and pitched it himself. He wanted Rick to blow a line on the Lancer set and then have a real crisis about it. Tarantino didn't want to interrupt the Western sequence. He eventually said yes.
On the day, Tarantino directed the scene by shouting prompts from close range while the cameras rolled. DiCaprio had loose subjects rather than scripted lines.
Brad Pitt later said it was one of the greatest pieces of acting he'd ever seen on film.
Once Upon a Time keeps landing in Backlot lists. This is a good reason to finally pull it up.
