Something weird happened to a lot of people who went to see The Odyssey this month. They sat down for a Christopher Nolan epic, the lights dimmed, and before Matt Damon could take a single step toward Ithaca, they got ambushed by one of the scariest trailers in recent memory. The movie was Other Mommy, and if you haven't seen the trailer yet, it just dropped online and you should probably watch it somewhere you feel safe.
The premise is simple in the way that the best horror premises always are. An eight-year-old girl named Bela is already living through her parents' crumbling marriage when something crawls out of her closet at night. Something that looks almost exactly like her mom. The entity she names "Other Mommy" becomes more threatening as the film goes on, and the entire nightmare is filtered through a child who is already emotionally vulnerable and desperate for comfort. That's not a jump scare premise, that's a dread machine.
Jessica Chastain plays the dual role of Bela's actual mother Ursula and the sinister entity mimicking her, and you can tell the two apart because Ursula wears glasses. It's a Clark Kent detail that sounds funny until the trailer makes it genuinely unsettling. Chastain has done horror before, with Mama and It: Chapter Two both on her resume, but this looks like something different. The doppelganger body language is wrong in all the right ways, and the effects work looks phenomenal.
The talent stacked behind this thing is hard to ignore. It's directed by Rob Savage, who made Host for $100,000 during lockdown and scared the internet half to death, then followed it up with The Boogeyman. The screenplay is by Nathan Elston, who wrote for Succession. James Wan, the architect behind Saw and The Conjuring, is producing through Blumhouse's Atomic Monster. The source material is Josh Malerman's novel Incidents Around the House, and if you know Malerman from Bird Box, know that this one reportedly goes to darker places.
The early online reaction after The Odyssey screenings has been exactly the kind of word of mouth horror movies live and die by. People comparing notes, debating the opening jump scare, some calling it the scariest trailer they've seen in theaters in years.
