Rhys Frake-Waterfield launched the Twisted Childhood Universe when the original Winnie-the-Pooh character entered the US public domain in 2022. He made Blood and Honey on a microbudget. It worked. Then came Peter Pan, then Bambi, then Pinocchio.
Pinocchio: Unstrung opens Friday. The film's Pinocchio is a full practical animatronic built by Todd Masters, whose effects shop made Slither and Tales from the Crypt. Operating the puppet required six crew members simultaneously.
Robert Englund, who played Freddy Krueger from 1984 to 2010, voices the sinister Cricket. In this version, the Cricket is not a conscience. He's the one encouraging Pinocchio to kill.
If the horror Winnie-the-Pooh was your thing, this franchise keeps going. It opens on limited screens Friday.
