Francine Rivers published Redeeming Love in 1991. It came out as a secular romance novel through Bantam. She got the rights back, rewrote it to reflect her faith journey, and republished it with Multnomah in 1997. That version sold millions.

When a film adaptation finally came together thirty years later, Rivers decided she wasn't going to wait and see what someone else did with it. She wrote a sample screenplay herself to show the shape she thought it needed. They bought it. She wrote the final script alongside director D.J. Caruso.

The film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa, standing in for Gold Rush California. They wrapped in February 2020, just before the pandemic closed everything down. COVID still pushed the release from spring 2021 to January 2022.

The book sold millions on both sides of the religion aisle.
