Savage House is in theaters. Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy star as Sir Chauncey and Lady Savage, an aristocratic couple pursuing a better life in 18th century England while a pox outbreak and Jacobite uprising have their own plans.
The comedy is in the name. The Savages want propriety. History keeps offering something else. Director Peter Glanz leans into this: period setting, absurdist tone, chaos as constant companion.
Richard E. Grant in a powdered wig behaving badly is exactly what you wanted without knowing you needed it. Claire Foy showing what she does when the script lets her be funny is worth the ticket on its own.
Before you go: Barry Lyndon. 1975, Stanley Kubrick. The blueprint for aristocratic farce in period costume.
