The film earns its twist. Misha Osherovich plays Ethan, and Osherovich is nonbinary in real life. That gives the film a layer most high school comedies don't have. The joke becomes a discovery. The premise delivers something real.

If you liked But I'm a Cheerleader or watched the queer teen comedies of the early 2000s wondering why they were never serious enough about it, She's the He! is a bit like that, but it follows through.
