In 2017, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal were both making Pilgrimage, a low-budget medieval film shot in Ireland. Holland was 17. Both were auditioning for their Marvel roles at the same time, so they filmed each other's tryout tapes on the same set.
Before Holland's camera rolled, Bernthal told him: run up that wall, do a double backflip, then start the scene. Nobody else auditioning could do that physically. Holland did it. Bernthal says he takes a little credit for what happened next.
Nine years later, they're co-stars. Bernthal plays the Punisher in Brand New Day, and the director described the character as a warning sign for where Peter could go if he loses himself. Knowing this backstory changes how you watch them on screen together.
People on Backlot are already seeing it early. Brand New Day opens July 28.
